Did you know that Oklahoma ranks 4th in the US in the number of hungry families? Did you know that one in five children in Eastern Oklahoma are in danger of going to bed each night hungry? Organizations like Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma are helping to combat this hunger crisis in our state.
You may have read in a Tulsa World article (June 20th issue) that the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma recently received a 60 semi-truck shipment of food made possible by a federal grant. The Food Bank currently needs volunteers to help box the food into 58,000 boxes. These boxes will provide food to 58,000 hungry individuals in a 24 county region in Eastern Oklahoma and needs to be distributed by September 30th.
This would be a great opportunity for you to help serve in the community this summer. If you, your family, or a group you are a part of would like to help meet this challenge at the Food Bank, call John Sanders at 585-2800, ext. 145, or e-mail jsanders@cfbeo.org to get more information on when you can volunteer. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Saturday for people 12 years and older.
Founded in 1981, the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is one of the largest, private hunger-relief organizations in Oklahoma. They distribute donated grocery items to 460 Partner Programs in 24 counties of Eastern Oklahoma. These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after school programs, shelters and senior centers. In turn, those programs collectively feed 60,000 people each week, the equivalent of 621,000 meals per month. In addition, the Food Bank helps raise public awareness about hunger and the role of food banking in alleviating hunger. Last year the Food Bank distributed more than 9.5 million pounds of food.
