Bavarian Cabbage Salad

As a change from coleslaw, this salad goes particularly well with roast pork.
  • 1 Small Head Cabbage
  • Salt
  • 1/4 pound Bacon
  • 1 Medium Onion
  • 4 tablespoons Vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sugar
  • Salt and Black Pepper to Taste
  • 1 tablespoon Cumin Seeds, lightly crushed

Add Ingredients to Shopping List

  1. Wash the cabbage.
  2. Slice into very thin strips.
  3. Place into a saucepan.
  4. Cover with cold salted water.
  5. Bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.
  7. Drain well.
  8. Cut bacon crosswise into thin strips.
  9. Fry until crisp.
  10. Peel and chop the onion.
  11. Add to the bacon, sautéing for 1 minute.
  12. In a bowl, combine the cabbage, bacon and onion.
  13. In a separate bowl, blend the vinegar, sugar, salt, black pepper and cumin seeds.
  14. Pour over the cabbage, mixing well.
  15. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes to blend flavors.
  16. Serve cold.
