When we talk about depth of field we are talking about the area in a photo that is in focus. Often we control the depth of field to emphasize the subject in a photo. You have seen pictures of a flower with the background out of focus. This causes the viewer's eye to go directly to the flower. This type of focus is considered a "shallow" depth of field because only a small area of the image is in focus.

Today's cameras have evolved to the point that they can do most of the heavy lifting when you want to take a picture. If you’re new to digital photography I recommend setting your camera on auto, this will assure, in most situations, you will get the shot. However, you will discover in some situations, the results are less than satisfying.

Most of us are shooting only digital and we face new issues with our pictures. Unlike film, digital images won't degrade. But they are subject to loss due to failure of the storage devices. Memory cards and hard drives all fail with time and use. So, what is the best way to keep those memories safe?

Too often when we take a picture we fail to 'fill the frame'. We end up with a photo that has too much space around our subject and too many distractions in the picture. To solve this problem we need to crop the picture to focus attention on our subject.
